As with most metropolitan areas, you will read various contradictory population figures. The reason, of course, is the area people live in is always larger than its political boundaries. The most realistic figure for Albuquerque is just over 650,000. That takes into account all the surrounding communities such as Corrales, Placitas and Rio Rancho whose residents either work or shop in Albuquerque. Census 2000 data shows that Bernalillo County (where Albuquerque is located) gained 15.8% in population during the last decade, while Sandoval County (where Rio Rancho, Placitas and Corrales are located) gained 42%.
